If you missed Friday's news conference, here's the gist. Operation Iron Sights ran from July 13 through Sept. 16, with federal, state and local agencies targeting suspected violent offenders in Sedgwick County. U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser and ATF Director Robert Cekada announced the results at Wichita State University.
Officials said 34 people were targeted. The Wichita Eagle reports 30 have been arrested and more arrests could come, while KSN puts the arrests at 34.
- Cash seized: $13,000
- Drugs seized: roughly 15 pounds
- Wichita shootings: lowest in six years, Chief Joe Sullivan says
One of the people arrested is Lafayette Washington, 46, the alleged leader of a Wichita drug trafficking ring. The Eagle also describes an alleged Wichita drug trafficker nicknamed “Dirty Dot Com.” Kriegshauser said the charges include a drug conspiracy tied to an overdose of a 2-year-old in August. Carey Watts, 20, is accused of attacking an ATF agent with a firearm in July. Hays Post adds why Kriegshauser likes federal charges: some carry mandatory minimum sentences.
