COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wichita youth joined first responders at L.A.W. Camp on June 25, where local professionals demonstrated emergency response techniques—helping participants learn practical safety skills.  KWCH
  • Today, 140 Wichita kids attended L.A.W. Camp where police, EMS, and firefighters spent three days showing they care about public safety. The camp also featured a KBI agent who shared his story to warn about the dangers of fentanyl.  KWCH

  • A well-loved Wichita food truck operated by a couple for over ten years was completely destroyed in a fire Tuesday night.  KAKE

CRIME NEWS

  • A Wichita man, Michael D. Dixon Jr., 26, has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm after fatally shooting 23-year-old Sauhni Stallings on Saturday in the 4100 block of West Pine—he is scheduled to appear in court next on July 7.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wichita Mayor Lily Wu has appealed an ethics violation decision that claimed she broke city rules—officials said the ethics board will review her appeal soon.  KWCH
  • Downtown Wichita is preparing for paid parking starting July 1 as crews install kiosks and signs on Douglas, St. Francis, and Emporia. Council Member Brandon Johnson said the new system will charge $1 per hour or $5 per day for public lots and $10 per day for parking structures with enforcement from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.  KSN
  • Wichita presented a $36 million plan to address flooding in Bleckley where residents have faced repeated floods and property loss. Phase one begins June 30 with drainage channel repairs between Kellogg and Waterman — phases two and three will follow next year.  KWCH
  • The Wichita Police Department is applying for a federal grant to buy software—letting school staff quickly alert officers during school emergencies. City Council approved the grant application for the School Violence Prevention Program—if approved, the new system will connect to the police’s real-time information center this fall.  KSN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wichita native Austin Carson, a former Army soldier, got help for his mental health from doctors in Wichita after traumatic events in Iraq — he now volunteers while his family and service dog Ember support his recovery.  KSN

  • Maize High School's Alan Hanna was named the 2024-25 Gatorade Kansas Boys Track & Field Player of the Year for his record high jump and strong work in sports, academics, and community service—a recognition that comes as he prepares to compete at Kansas State University this fall.  KWCH
