COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way is asking local residents to volunteer for a point-in-time homeless count that will improve data for community support (the call was announced Dec. 5).  KWCH
  • A local man who once experienced homelessness now leads a community outreach program — offering housing guidance and support to neighbors seeking a fresh start. His efforts have drawn attention from local aid groups and highlight a renewed commitment to community care.  KWCH

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Boeing said it will acquire Spirit in the coming weeks (a move designed to strengthen its aviation portfolio) and local industry experts expect the deal to influence regional business trends.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • USD 259 announced that its historic Chester Lewis+Mathewson building will close permanently at the end of this semester due to structural safety issues, with current programs relocating to new facilities. Officials plan a public farewell tour before demolition to help preserve its history.  The Voice
  • Wichita Public School students performed live holiday music at McCormick School Museum last Friday during its annual open house — featuring elementary and middle school performers who celebrated the district's educational history.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Moran said he expects Boeing’s next-generation airliner work to take place in Wichita, a plan that could boost local growth. He made the remarks on Dec. 5.  KWCH
  • Senator Jerry Moran visited Wichita on Dec. 5 to learn about local food insecurity in meetings with community leaders and service providers. He said the visit underscored the need for improved support systems for residents.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kansas State hired Collin Klein as its 36th head football coach last Thursday, and he landed in Manhattan on Friday after signing a five-year, $4.3 million deal. He will be introduced at 4 p.m. this coming Thursday (a former Wildcats quarterback) and step in once Texas A&M’s postseason run ends.  KWCH
  • Friends is in the NAIA football quarterfinals for the first time and will face Benedictine today at Adair-Austin Stadium — the Falcons have a perfect 12-0 season and lead the nation with 57.2 points per game.  KWCH
