COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of the Plains held a drive-through food drive on Friday at its Wichita office – community members dropped off non-perishable items that were taken to local food banks as part of the United Against Hunger initiative.  KWCH
  • Union Rescue Mission in Wichita is preparing for the season’s first hard freeze expected Sunday as lower temperatures may drive more people to seek shelter and food boxes amid a federal government shutdown. The shelter will expand capacity when temperatures fall to 25 degrees or lower — officials worry it may soon reach full capacity.  KWCH
  • The Coalition to End Homelessness announced that Second Light will open early this weekend as an emergency winter shelter in the former Park Elementary School building at 1025 N. Main St.—it will operate from 8 p.m. Sunday until 8 a.m. Tuesday, run from Dec. 1 until March 15, and prompt Union Rescue Mission to open a men-only emergency service during life-threatening weather while Lord’s Diner continues to provide meals.  KSN
  • Today, the first-ever Vex Robotics Air Capital Showdown is underway at Century II and will continue on Sunday as teams compete in robotics challenges.  KSN
  • Dozens gathered Thursday night at Saint Mark United Methodist Church (north Wichita) for a prayer vigil calling for an end to violence and urging healing in the city. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan joined community members as faith leaders and officials united in their message that enough is enough.  FOX Kansas
  • Local social media page Wichita Famous hosts Free Fifty Friday, a scavenger hunt that sends hundreds racing through town to find a $50 prize hidden by founder Ron Knackstedt. The event will return this Friday with a new partnership—bringing extra surprises—and last week’s prize was donated to a local food pantry to help those affected by SNAP suspension.  KSN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kansas author Natalee Ganyon is preserving the history of Navarre, the small town near Abilene that was mostly destroyed by fire a century ago and now has only 52 residents. Her ongoing work helps keep the town’s past alive for future generations.  KWCH
  • Gilley's Park City, a new country-western venue at 1500 E. 77th St. N, will open on December 15 at 6 p.m.—launching a December Concert Series featuring acts such as Scotty Alexander, Michael Austin, Colt Ford, Dallas Prior, Aaron Tippin and LOCASH for a New Year's Eve celebration. Tickets for all shows will go on sale November 17 and visitors can also try the saloon, dance hall, BBQ, snack bar and sports bar.  Wichita By E.B.

  • Christa McAuliffe Academy is set to host a Veterans Day celebration on November 11—an event planned to honor military veterans.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas food stamp recipients received their full SNAP benefits for November after the state completed distribution on November 7—ensuring eligible residents have timely food assistance.  KWCH
  • The City of Wichita said that construction will begin next week along Museum Boulevard in Riverside and lane closures will start Friday for the Hess Reservoir and Pump Station project—Museum Boulevard will be reduced to one lane in each direction through spring with removed trees later replaced.  KSN
  • The Kansas Department for Children and Families said it restored full November SNAP benefits on Friday, sending over $31.6 million to nearly 86,000 households on their EBT cards + it recalculated each household’s benefits using new USDA guidelines. It processed the file so funds were loaded directly onto the cards without a staggered rollout.  KSN

  • Wichita’s Medical Loan Closet helps residents access affordable durable medical equipment; founded by Lloyd Hanna and located at 6655 East Harry Street, the non-profit offers low-cost loans and accepts donations during set hours—residents can call 316-779-8989 for more details.  Wichita By E.B.

  • Storm Team 12 meteorologist Jake Dunne will run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents next week, including a run in Antarctica—where conditions are cold but now relatively mild. His journey will be tracked as he takes on this monumental challenge.  KWCH
