COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wichita police are giving away free bicycle lights to help riders stay visible at night. The event takes place today from 7-8 p.m. at 803 N. Broadway—riders must bring their bikes to receive a light.  KSN

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge in Texas dismissed a criminal conspiracy charge against Boeing after the company agreed to pay $1.1 billion in fines and compensation—key 737 Max parts are built in Wichita at Spirit AeroSystems. Relatives of crash victims had urged for a trial but the judge approved the settlement.  KNSS
  • Community members gathered Thursday night at St. Mark's United Methodist Church to honor Travon Stewart—a youth football coach fatally shot two weeks ago at Dr. Glen Dey Park during a game attended by 200 to 300 people—with police still seeking a suspect and offering a $5,000 reward for anonymous tips.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wichita Art Museum extended its traveling exhibit 'Abstract Expressionists: The Women' through November 30—free admission begins tomorrow for local visitors. The exhibit features works like Helen Frankenthaler’s 'Bending Blue' that use a unique staining technique to fill the space.  KMUW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kansas wheat farmers met last week to review crop progress amid unseasonable rains, delayed planting, and armyworm challenges. Farmers in the southwest reported later planting while those in the northwest advanced with fall harvest—though frost and volunteer wheat remain a concern.  KSN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students enjoyed the Shocker Corn Roast outside the Rhatigan Student Center—Wichita State University will open online registration for spring 2026 Monday, Nov. 10 at 7 a.m., with non-degree students beginning Friday, Nov. 15 and the final day to change courses set for Jan. 26.  The Sunflower

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Wichita’s Eisenhower National Airport, travelers report smooth operations despite FAA-ordered flight reductions at major airports nationwide. Airport officials say if the federal shutdown continues, shutdown-related ripple effects could soon cause delays here.  KWCH
  • The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a settlement that creates a Large Load Power Service rate plan for facilities using over 75 MW during peak hours—this rule gives manufacturers and data centers a fixed contract with a 12-year minimum term and collateral requirements to lower energy costs for average utility customers. The plan will affect new or expanding large users and aims to prevent rate increases from burdening ordinary households.  KSN
  • Newton Police Department introduced new camouflage badges for November to honor veterans—badges purchased by officers indicate either veteran or officer—and said the gesture honors all veterans.  KWCH
  • The City of Wichita will install high-visibility crosswalk markings, signs, and advanced warnings near Heights High School crossing—planned for the coming weeks following a near-miss incident that raised safety concerns. This move comes after a driver slowed for students and after discussions with Wichita Public Schools over recent safety issues.  KWCH
  • Leon city manager Jodie Laidler started a program where teen speeders can write essays on driving safety instead of getting tickets. Kendra Mast said she felt relief about avoiding insurance hikes and a record—her essay must be between 250 and 750 words based on the speeding amount.  KWCH
  • On Thursday, a final mile ceremony was held at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita to honor Navy veteran Daniel Schuhs, who served from 1975 to 1978 and died without family or friends. He was buried with honors at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield as community members paid their respects.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act began Saturday and Kansans may face higher health insurance costs when a key tax credit ends at the end of the year—Stephanie Barr of Prairie Village said her premium could jump from $21.70 to over $600. Lawmakers warn that if Congress does not extend the credit, more people could lose coverage and face steeper costs.  KMUW
