COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three local artists donated artwork to the Wichita Police and Fire Foundation to brighten the soft interview rooms at the new Police Department Patrol East Substation—making it a more comfortable space for crime victims to report incidents. The rooms will soon showcase printed canvases, paintings and calming items like blankets, pillows and coloring books.  KSN

CULTURE NEWS

  • KSN News at Noon reporter Jemelle Holopirek highlighted upcoming Wichita events including Wild Lights at Sedgwick County Zoo, a dinosaur exhibit at Exploration Place, and a museum event for National Electric Guitar Day — events that will give locals unique experiences. Other events, such as a vintage expo on Nov. 8th and a concert on Nov. 15th, will add to the city’s cultural calendar — offering more choices for outings.  KSN

  • Today, a Wichita market is helping feed families with discounted groceries as the government shutdown reaches its 36th day and SNAP benefit cuts strain household budgets—community members find the support crucial.  KAKE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Wichita school district completed its $10.5 million security upgrade at Hamilton Middle School by adding a video doorbell entry system and improved classroom lockdown options across 30 schools—part of a broader $20 million plan to enhance student safety. The upgrades come after a community survey on safety and belonging prompted the district to update its procedures.  KWCH
  • Wichita schools introduced a new secure access system—designed to protect student and staff data—as officials work to fully implement it across all campuses soon.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Halstead voters blocked a plan for a new battery energy storage system in the industrial park—2/3 voted against it on Tuesday. Residents had fire safety concerns—since the project was designed to power 200,000 homes for up to four hours.  KWCH
  • Wichita City Council approved a formal 10-year plan for cleanup at 29th & Grove that lets Union Pacific build treatment hubs to remove toxic chemicals from the groundwater. Health officials will soon start free liver and kidney cancer tests for residents who may have been exposed—public meetings will provide more details on timelines and designs.  The Voice
  • Wichita’s Eisenhower National Airport has seen strong local support for workers affected by the government shutdown—community members and groups have donated food, toiletries, and baby items at a terminal donation spot. United Way of the Plains will host a drive-up food drive on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their downtown office to collect nonperishable items for local pantries.  KSN
