COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ann Houk from the Wichita Veterans’ Day Parade explained how residents can volunteer for the upcoming event — the parade will honor service members on Veterans Day.  KSN
  • Progressive Missionary Baptist Church ran a mobile food pantry on Friday at 1 p.m. using goods from the Kansas Food Bank and served about 175 cars—expecting more families to need help starting Saturday due to potential SNAP benefit cuts—at 2727 E. 25th St. N.  KWCH

  • Musician Max Abood released a five-song EP called An Open Letter to Myself under the name Gray Shore that features him playing nearly every instrument—his father played keyboards on Heavy Weather—and reflects his personal struggles and musical inspirations.  KMUW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Friday, Kansas State University said the Kansas Forest Service confirmed the emerald ash borer in Marshall County. This marks the fourth county with the pest this year — the 19th overall — and experts warn the invasive beetle is likely to harm ash trees.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Kansas Department of Transportation closed northbound I-135 at 6:00 a.m. for the I-135 Gold North Junction project, with the closure continuing until late Sunday afternoon. The road work on I-135 and the K-96 expansion has led to heavy traffic backups—KDOT plans to add three lanes and diamond interchanges on K-96 until 2029—to improve the flow for commuters.  KWCH
  • State officials said Kansans will not receive new SNAP benefits in November due to the government shutdown, as benefits will not be added to EBT cards after Oct. 31. The USDA directed states to halt issuance and Gov. Laura Kelly noted that a court ordered a funding plan by Nov. 3 to help families access food.  KSN
  • Construction work on I-135 and K-96 will cause additional road closures today and into next week. Officials advise drivers to plan alternate routes—expect delays.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sedgwick County Park now has free Get Active in Nature — GAIN 60+ exercise equipment aimed at older adults but open to everyone. The project, made possible with a federal grant and a partnership with local aging agencies and the state, places machines with QR code instructions next to Boundless Playground.  Wichita By E.B.

  • Golden Eagles head coach Chris Jaax led his team to a shutout win in their playoff opener after a slow start and a key interception by Keaton St. Vrain. The team now waits to see if their next game will be against Great Bend or Newton as they push for the state championship.  KSN
