Good morning, Wichita. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 29th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wichita Animal Shelter and Kansas Humane Society are asking locals for help as rising costs lead to record pet surrenders. In September the shelter took in nearly 900 animals—most were not reclaimed, so officials urge spaying, neutering, fostering, and volunteer support.  KWCH
  • Students from Bishop Carroll High School partnered with Catholic Charities’ Our Daily Bread Food Pantry for its 25th Annual Fall Food Drive and collected 32,000 cans over the past month. They learned how their work helps neighbors in need — an effort that shows anyone may require support — while filling the pantry’s shelves.  KSN
  • Sedgwick County Fire District 1 received nine Essential Fido Bag kits donated by The FETCH Foundation on Tuesday at Fire Station 32, 7750 N. Wyandotte Way in Park City — the kits include a reusable muzzle mask to help give oxygen to animals exposed to smoke inhalation.  KWCH
  • Wichita food pantries reported a surge in demand after the government shutdown and SNAP pause forced providers to tap deeper into supplies—one pantry noted a 50% increase in new clients on Tuesday. Local organizations are ramping up efforts and asking the community for help as they prepare for more families needing support during the upcoming holiday season.  KSN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Textron Aviation announced Tuesday that if awarded the Navy’s Undergraduate Jet System Training program contract, it will produce the Beechcraft M-346N in Wichita and invest $38 million to modernize 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space—creating about 100 direct jobs. Wichita leaders, including Mayor Lily Wu, attended the event as the Navy is expected to make its decision in January 2027.  KSN
  • Carter’s will close around 150 stores over the next three years and cut roughly 300 office jobs, with the two Wichita locations set to close when their leases expire—no specific stores were named. The move is part of the company’s plan to adjust its product mix and pricing to offset rising costs.  KSN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kansas tourists remain stranded on high floors in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa nears the island—expected to make landfall as a category five storm—after it destroyed 750 homes and displaced thousands in the Dominican Republic on Friday.  FOX Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Agriculture said SNAP benefits set for November 1 will not be delivered if the government shutdown does not end before Saturday. Pastor Valecia Scribner at Woodland United Methodist Church in North Riverside organized a weekly potluck — the first planning meeting is set for today at 5:15 p.m. to help neighbors at risk.  FOX Kansas

HEALTH NEWS

  • 12 News is reporting on breast cancer by explaining how patients, families and communities are affected and detailing when to seek care as well as the signs of the disease — the report cites figures from the American Cancer Society showing more than 2 million cancer diagnoses, including nearly 320,000 breast cancer cases and 42,000 deaths in 2025.  KWCH
