COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army is handing out free coats and winter clothing this week through its Warm Hearts program for Sedgwick County residents at its 3rd Street and Market and Dora Avenue and Everett Street locations, operating daily from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and still asking for donations of kids’ coats—supplies are limited as colder weather sets in.  KSN
  • A Wichita family has decorated its yard for the second year as part of the annual Skeletons for Saint Jude fundraiser to raise money for kids fighting cancer. The Welches hope their spooky display will boost community giving + support children in need.  FOX Kansas

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 will return to the rails in 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary + the company plans a transcontinental trip and discussions with Norfolk Southern to host the engine.  KSN
  • Firebirds Wood Fired Grill plans to build a second restaurant at 2825 N. Maize Road in northwest Wichita next to Dutch Bros. The restaurant, known for its scratch kitchen and support for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, will join its current location on 13th Street.  Wichita By E.B.
  • A permit was filed for a new $3 million steel frame building on the former Outback Steakhouse site at Bradley Fair on 21st Street + Rock Road in northeast Wichita, and the project may host The Cheesecake Factory or another chain once Bradley Fair leases the space. The filing does not guarantee the restaurant's arrival but shows a major development in the local dining scene.  KSN
  • Greater Grounds Coffee in downtown Wichita blends good coffee with faith and community by serving specialty drinks and crepes while supporting local musicians. Owner Byron McSwain— a Navy veteran— introduced a pay-it-forward token program that invites guests to share a free drink with someone else.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The YMCA honored 172 Wichita teens at the Scottish Rite Center who finished a program that teaches job skills and leadership. The free 12-week program starts in February and runs through a summer phase ending July 31 while planning to serve up to 400 students in 2026.  The Voice

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tanganyika Wildlife Park celebrated the birth of a litter of cheetah cubs on Oct. 11—ten cubs were born and three died, leaving seven survivors that now receive round-the-clock bottle feeds in the animal care nursery. The park participates in the Zoological Association of America’s Cheetah Animal Management Program to help maintain a healthy and genetically diverse cheetah population.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers have taken a detour since Monday after the southbound I-135 exit to Kansas Highway 15 closed for bridge repairs over the Wichita Drainage Canal—vehicles now follow the Hydraulic Avenue exit, MacArthur Road east, and Southeast Boulevard to rejoin K-15. Sedgwick County Public Works will install a four-way stop at 29th Street North and 135th Street West on Wednesday as deputies guide motorists during the change.  KSN
  • Wichita food banks have seen increased traffic as SNAP benefits may soon expire amid a government shutdown entering its second month—188,000 Kansans depend on these benefits.  KSN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chelsea Mullins — a breast cancer survivor who discovered her diagnosis through self-exams — works as a nurse navigator at Ascension Via Christi, helping younger patients face the disease. Experts say one in eight women may develop breast cancer, and over 300000 cases are expected this year.  KWCH
