COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents worried about losing SNAP benefits lined up at a Wichita food pantry on October 24th as concerns grew about possible changes to the aid program—local officials are set to review details and work with community groups for clarity.  KWCH

CRIME NEWS

  • Wichita community organizations organized grief support after a deadly shooting occurred during a youth football game on Thursday night at Dr. Glen Dey Park—32-year-old victim succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and licensed professionals offered guidance at a gathering held at Wichita Habitat for Humanity on Friday at 6:30 p.m.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wichita filmmakers Sara and Charity Harmon—who balance full-time jobs with their documentary work—won an award at Tallgrass Film Festival for their film Let’s Talk Shop, which celebrates the city’s mid-century department stores. The film is showing today at 3 p.m. at Tallgrass Film Center where the sisters will hold a post-show Q&A.  The Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita State University rededicated its Student Success Center on October 24 in honor of Riley Leroy Pitts. The ceremony honored his contributions as students and staff joined in the tribute.  KWCH
  • On Friday morning, Wichita North High students learned about medical careers when KU Medicine brought a Da Vinci Surgical Machine for hands-on demonstration—students got a close look at robotic surgery as part of their bio-med program.  KWCH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Toxic algae levels were reported Friday at lakes such as Amesbury Lake, Colwich City Lake and Lake Afton — state health officials advised against swimming, boating or any water contact to safeguard people, pets and livestock.  KSN
  • Marion County announced multiple road closures due to overnight storm flooding (the closed roads are 190th between Remington and Quail Creek, 190th between Limestone and Nighthawk, Upland from County Lake to 256, Eisenhower from ball fields to Highway 56, Quail Creek from 190th to 180th and Clover from Highway 150 to 170th).  KWCH
  • City officials announced a cleanup effort for a contaminated site in northeast Wichita — tests confirmed the pollution and work will start soon to protect residents.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Transportation will close northbound I-135 in Wichita today at 6 a.m. until late afternoon on Sunday, Oct. 26 as part of the Junction Gold Project Phase 2B to remove formwork and overhang brackets. Drivers on northbound I-135 must detour via westbound K-96 and Hillside Avenue, while southbound motorists needing eastbound K-96 should exit at North Hydraulic Avenue & follow the detour signs.  KNSS
  • Governor Kelly announced she will hold food drives at the remaining stops of her statewide listening tour, in partnership with the Kansas Food Bank & Harvesters, to help communities impacted by the federal shutdown. The stops begin October 29 in locations including Hays, Garden City, Kansas City, Leawood, Emporia, Pittsburg and Wichita, with space limited and RSVPs encouraged.  KWCH
