COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 90th Annual St. George Lebanese Dinner will take place this weekend at 7515 East 13th in Wichita—Saturday dinner is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a drive-thru until 8 p.m. and Sunday dinner from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event offers traditional Lebanese dishes such as cabbage rolls, meat and green beans over rice, Lebanese salad, pita bread, and baklava.  KSN
  • Build & Rebuild Educational Ministries in northeast Wichita keeps Dr. William “Buggs” Polite’s dream alive with mentoring programs, GED support and creative activities at a repurposed Head Start building at 1751 N. Ash—now led by his children and colleague Hercules Finley, the hub will also serve as the starting point for Wichita’s Million Man March commemoration this fall.  The Voice
  • The WIC program will soon stop direct shipping of infant formula due to the government shutdown, so Wichita organizations are stepping in to help local families. Sedgwick County will approve a support policy on Oct. 13 while the Kansas Birth Justice Society offers free baby supplies at Liberation Place.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alexis Phillips told KSN News at Noon about the 90th Annual Lebanese Dinner hosted by St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral, an event that has been a Wichita tradition for nearly 100 years and will take place this weekend — a nod to the community’s long heritage.  KSN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita State is renaming the Shocker Support Locker to honor alumna Kiah Duggins—she died earlier this year on a flight from Wichita to Washington.  KSN
  • Wichita students learned from Hispanic doctors and educators during the Hispanic Journeys to Leadership panel organized by the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine and Latino Medical Student Association—part of Hispanic Heritage Month that showed first-generation students can aim for medical careers.  KWCH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State health and wildlife officials reported that on Friday, several Kansas lakes were removed from the harmful algae watch list while many still show dangerous algae levels. Officials urge residents and pet owners to avoid water contact—ensuring public safety as the recreational season winds down.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dole VA hosted a Homeless Stand Down event that offered vital services and support to local homeless individuals—organizers said the program aimed to connect people with essential resources. The event was part of ongoing government efforts to address homelessness in the community.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Prairie Fire Marathon will take place downtown on Sunday—race officials said they will release more details on the route and start times soon.  KWCH
  • Next May, three games of Banana Ball will take place at Equity Bank Park — the new Loco Beach Coconuts will face the established Firefighters.  KSN
  • Bishop Carroll and Kapaun played a competitive football game on October 10 that drew a large crowd and showcased a long-standing rivalry on the field — the contest demonstrated strong local spirit and athletic effort.  KWCH
