EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Wichita school district has launched a pilot program called Community Schools at seven elementary schools to boost academics, health, social services, and community partnerships — the program is led by former Gordon Parks Academy Principal Latonia Kennedy. At Stanley Elementary, changes have already increased family involvement and improved student attendance, with third graders reaching up to 95% attendance.  KWCH
  • Tuesday, bus loads of fifth grade students from Sedgwick County gathered at the Sedgwick County Zoo for the annual Fire Prevention Day — where they learned fire safety tips through hands-on demonstrations. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sedgwick County officials say the federal shutdown may soon cut funding for WIC staff even though food benefits will remain until the end of October—local staff serve about 5,000 families and manage $170,000 in monthly costs. Officials are exploring options to provide basic food packages until a full budget is passed.  KSN
  • Kansas voters must register by Tuesday, Oct. 14 to vote in the upcoming General Election on Nov. 4—ballots will include local races for school board, city council and mayor.  KSN
  • Due to a government shutdown, the Kansas Women, Infants, and Children program will stop shipping special formula directly for infants and will not accept new orders after 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. The state will review existing orders by benefit dates and advises families to obtain the formula from local vendors or their healthcare providers — a change that may affect delivery times.  KSN
  • Sedgwick County’s tag office delays persist as residents face long wait times due to a consolidation plan that closed the East Kellogg location—personalized plate renewals have spurred a 400% rise in foot traffic. County Treasurer Brandi Baily urged residents to text 316 395 2940 with SGDouglasTag to join the virtual queue at 8:30 a.m. and use satellite sites in Derby, Wichita or Park City if needed.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • The ICT Street Team helps Wichita homeless with free medical care but now risks closing due to a 30% cut in state funds and a 150% jump in medication costs. Patient numbers grew 60%—forcing the group to seek more help before it shuts down.  FOX Kansas
  • F3 Wichita will host a free workout for local men at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday where over 100 members will gather to celebrate their anniversary early—growing from fewer than 20 men four years ago. The group encourages men to push their limits and has already sparked similar workout sessions in Newton, Valley Center and Wichita.  KSN
