  • In Sedgwick, The Meeting House is a nonprofit café that connects the community by offering free snacks on Meeting House Mondays and a food pantry supported by local donations—its menu features favorites like the B.A.T. sandwich and Campfire Mocha.   • The BBB has warned of a widespread phishing scam where callers claiming to be from a loan company are leaving messages that have led to over 1,500 reports — Wichita residents are urged to verify company details with official numbers before returning calls — to avoid fraud.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wichita will host a weeklong commemoration of the Million Man March starting Oct. 11 with a Books & Breakfast event at Build + Rebuild and a community cleanup in ZIP 67214. Events include worship, mentoring + support for Black business through Oct. 16 as local leaders renew the march’s legacy.  The Voice
  • Wichita State University is displaying memorabilia from actress Shirley Knight’s 60-year film and stage career until Oct.10 at the Cadman Art Gallery and The Looking Glass in the Rhatigan Student Center — the exhibit features awards, photos, and personal letters from the Kansas native.  KSN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to The Economist, Wichita was ranked the most affordable major city in the US to live solo for the second year in a row—beating cities like New York, Austin and Dallas. Mayor Lily Wu said the city is working to boost aviation, healthcare and IT jobs while keeping economic growth strong.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kelly announced she will begin The People’s Budget listening tour on Oct 9 in Salina—she plans to visit eight communities including Wichita to gather Kansans’ input on state budget priorities before the legislative session.  KWCH
  • Voters in Wichita must register by Oct. 14 for the Nov. 4 election that will decide local City Council, school board spots, and one county ballot measure. Early voting begins Oct. 20 at the Sedgwick County Election Office with additional locations opening Oct. 31—voters need to bring a valid photo ID.  The Sunflower
  • On Monday, the Wichita District 1 Advisory Board met at 6 p.m. at the Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center to review Crown Uptown Theatre’s request to raise the venue capacity beyond the 850 allowed by the fire code. The proposal is set for review at the Wichita Metropolitan Area Planning Commission meeting on Thursday at the Ronald Reagan Building—official approval is expected.  KSN
  • City officials in Wichita are asking residents to share their views on the search for a new city manager before Robert Layton retires at year's end, and input is accepted until Wednesday, October 8. The City Council will also consider paying for bridge repairs and police equipment improvements as part of the capital improvement program funded by local sales tax.  KNSS

  • Public Health Officer Tom Langer said Kansas’s WIC program is safe until the end of October because funding is paid after benefits are used—this keeps food aid available for families while experts warn that if federal spending stalls, other states might soon face a crisis in infant nutrition.  KWCH
