COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trigger—a German Shepherd rescued after being shot by an unknown assailant—is in need of an amputation surgery for his severely injured front leg. The Kansas Humane Society said a rescue coordinator’s family adopted him and is asking for donations to help cover the surgery costs.  KWCH

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fifty-five years ago, a charter plane carrying Wichita State football players, coaches, staff and fans crashed into a Colorado mountain due to pilot error — killing 31, including head coach Ben Wilson and 14 players, and prompting an annual remembrance ceremony held every October 2nd on campus near 17th and Hillside.  KNSS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Wichita business closed on October 2 after tariffs raised supply costs and made operations unsustainable — the owner said the increased expenses forced the shutdown.  KWCH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Wichita gift shop that served the community for 37 years is closing its retail operation because rising tariffs have increased the costs of imported goods—its flower preservation service will continue. Owner Jana Northcutt said low profit margins and unpredictable cost hikes forced the decision.  KWCH
  • NextEra Energy energized the Wolf Creek-Blackberry transmission line on Oct. 2, completing the 94-mile, 345 kV project ahead of schedule and within budget. The new line spans five Kansas counties—Coffey, Anderson, Allen, Bourbon and Crawford—and is expected to save customers $350 million over 40 years while boosting local economic output.  KSN
  • Wichita State University’s report says Wichita and Kansas City will grow at least 25% in the next 50 years while rural counties such as Decatur may lose nearly half their people—raising concerns that slower growth could reduce new job opportunities. Researchers urge Kansas to bring in more work in technology, automation, and artificial intelligence to support the economy.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SGA announced the midterm election results on Wednesday evening, filling 8 of 27 seats with 937 votes—a record jump from last year’s 77. SGA will contact write-in candidates by Friday at noon to finalize the remaining seats.  The Sunflower

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wichita voters will head to the polls in a November municipal election and will choose candidates for local offices and measures—official details were released on Oct.2.  KWCH
  • Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Laura Rainwater detailed the upcoming election schedule at a media briefing with Wichita Mayor Lily Wu, noting that voter registration updates must be completed by Oct. 14. Early in-person voting starts Oct. 20 and the mail ballot application deadline is Oct. 28—about 20,000 registered voters in Sedgwick County will not receive a ballot because Wichita Council District 2 and District 4 are excluded.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Utah State football player Ty Couey recalled the somber memory of a 1970 plane crash that killed 31 people—including players, boosters and crew—as Wichita State was traveling to a game in Logan, marking a day with a solemn prayer vigil that left a lasting grief 55 years later.  KWCH
