CRIME NEWS

  • Fallen Hays Police Sergeant Scott Heimann, who was fatally shot while answering a domestic violence call, will return home Tuesday via a dignified transfer starting at noon from Wichita—his funeral mass is scheduled for Friday at 10:30 a.m.  KSN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Bert Kreischer will perform at Intrust Bank Arena on May 17 as part of his Permission to Party World Tour—adding Wichita as a stop. Ticket pre-sale begins today at 10 a.m. while full sales start Oct. 3 at 10 a.m.  KWCH
  • The Wichita Emerald City Tattoo Convention will be held this weekend at Kansas Star Casino in Wichita—local tattoo artists and vendors will showcase creative designs for fans in the area.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers, students, and community members at Wichita's Hyde Elementary School observed Every Child Matters Day on Tuesday by wearing orange shirts to honor thousands of Indigenous children taken from their families.  KSN
  • Wichita State revived its long-standing Shocktoberfest tradition when campus lit up Monday with performances by the cheer team, marching band, and athletes—students are working to restore its past popularity. The festival will continue all week and culminate Saturday at Koch Arena with a headlining set by Lupe Fiasco.  KSN
  • Holly Gerke from the Office of Recruitment & Admissions at K-State told KSN News that high school seniors and transfer students will soon benefit from the ApplyKansas program, which will run from October 6 to 8 and waive application fees at any state school.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local organizations including the ACLU have urged the Sedgwick County Court System to change its bail practices because it keeps people in jail when they cannot pay. Data from December 2023 to December 2024 show that low-level charges keep defendants detained for days, weeks, or months—causing job, home, and family problems.  KWCH
  • Wichita held an informational town hall Tuesday night on the judicial process and bonding—Council Member Brandon Johnson and District Attorney Marc Bennett explained routine procedures as locals protested the perceived special treatment for Clowie McLaughlin in the aftermath of the Bell crash. About 100 residents attended and left with more questions about why detailed case questions could not be answered.  KSN

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A reader recently tipped off that a new food truck called El Alteno now serves authentic Mexican and Indian dishes in Wichita. The truck is located at the northwest corner of 21st and Woodlawn next to the American Eagle gas station — its menu includes tacos, burritos, and goat curry among other choices.  Wichita By E.B.
