COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wichita will host several fall festivals this season — the events are planned to offer community activities and celebrate autumn with local vendors.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wichita filmmaker Leif Jonker has curated two festivals for horror fans this fall. The Starlite Drive-In series began Sept 26 and runs until Oct 26 with films like Nightmare on Elm Street—Creepshow, while the Boulevard Theatres series runs from Oct 1 until Oct 29 featuring films such as Day of the Dead—The Crazies.  KMUW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Evergy said that starting next month, its rates will rise about $8 to $9 a month for homeowners—marking its second permanent increase since the merger in 2018—to cover essential power grid investments. The Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board urged customers to conserve energy as costs rise.  KWCH
  • TerraPower, a company cofounded by Bill Gates — which began a $4 billion project in Wyoming last month — signed a memorandum with Evergy and Kansas officials to explore building an advanced nuclear reactor in Kansas. The project will check site safety, workforce readiness and community interest as environmental groups worry about high costs and water use.  KMUW
  • Axtell Community Grocery in northern Kansas is staying open thanks to nearly $500,000 raised by local investors and grants from the Kansas Healthy Food Initiative—keeping rural stores functioning amid rising prices and food deserts. The program has given more than $5 million since 2018 to help local grocers maintain essential food access.  The Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Several Kansas lakes remain on advisory due to blue-green algae, and officials from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks warn residents to avoid water contact—exposure can cause illness.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sedgwick County officials are considering a consolidation of tag office operations to lower costs and improve service efficiency—public meetings will be scheduled soon to gather community feedback.  KWCH
  • WPD unveiled a real-time information center today to show live updates on police activities in Wichita—this center will let officers share data fast to keep the community safe.  KWCH
  • Sedgwick County commissioners will consider a proposal next week to consolidate tag offices by closing the Kellogg office and moving all services to the Douglas office — the plan will save the county over $350,000 per year with Kellogg closing on Oct. 9 and operations shifting to Douglas on Oct. 14.  KSN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansas health officials warned local healthcare professionals on Sept. 25 about a rise in cases of C. auris—a multidrug-resistant fungus responsible for 14 infections since its first case in June—and urged strict hand hygiene and contact precautions in Wichita and nearby areas. Healthcare workers are following these measures to limit further spread.  KSN
