- ➤ Senior Services of Wichita named Wyatt Sheeder as its new executive director and he will start in November. Sheeder, who leads the Wichita Cancer Foundation, replaces longtime leader Laurel Alkire who retired in June — he brings years of board experience to the agency. KSN
- ➤ Wichita Festivals, Inc. announced that the Wichita Riverfest 2026 Poster & Button Artwork Contest is now open for entries with submissions due by October 31. The winning design will earn the artist a $4,000 cash prize. KNSS
- ➤ Wichita Park & Recreation is hosting Open Streets ICT on Douglas this Sunday, Sep. 28, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. when 2.5 miles will be closed to vehicles to let people walk, bike, and skate—free live music, dancing, food, and shopping at three hubs will also be offered with free electric bus rides from Wichita Transit between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. KWCH
- ➤ This summer, Wichita welcomed ReCreate, the city’s first upcycled art and craft supply store at 5422 E. Central that accepts donated supplies & gives part of every sale to local animal rescue Always & Furever to help vulnerable animals. Always & Furever will open a new location on October 11 at 4090 N. Hoover Ct. to expand its care for rescued pets. KWCH
- ➤ Volunteer Kansas is asking for donations and volunteers to send care packages overseas to U.S. troops this holiday season. Donations may be dropped off at Southwest National Bank branches or mailed while volunteers will meet at the Farm Credit Bank Building on November 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—package requests are due by November 10. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wichita police have equipped Comcare mental health professionals with tactical vest carriers—donated by Wichita police and firefighter foundations—to help them safely respond to crisis calls and reduce unnecessary detentions. KSN
- ➤ Sedgwick County commissioners held a meeting today to address unexpected changes in corrections funding that have left them baffled — they plan to review proposals to determine future budget plans. KSN
- ➤ The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a settlement that lets Evergy raise rates by $128 million to cover equipment replacement and grid improvements—new rates will take effect in the October billing cycle and customers using 900 kWh will pay about $8.47 more per month. KWCH
- ➤ Sedgwick County commissioners met Thursday to discuss a change in the grant funding formula for corrections that may cut up to 37% of the county’s $5 million funding + the corrections director said the new formula was set without county input and the commissioners plan to appeal to the governor and legislature. - ➤ Yesterday, Safe Streets Wichita partnered with Remedy Alliance for the People to distribute 4,000 boxes of Naloxone to help reverse opioid overdoses in Wichita—volunteers packed the boxes with instructions and provided training on how to use the lifesaving drug. KWCH
- ➤ Medicaid changes hurt a local clinic by reducing patient visits and lowering income, so the clinic reviewed its services to respond to the new rules. The clinic plans to adjust its operations and ask officials for help—hoping to improve its care. KWCH
