COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wichita Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff will take place Saturday, September 27 at noon on the 500 block of East Douglas Avenue — next to Naftzger Park — where free entry is offered with $5 tasting kits that fund local Wichita charities. Attendees will enjoy chili tasting, live music, vendors, and a 50/50 raffle that shares proceeds with Good Life Grants.  Wichita By E.B.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A lightning strike set a fire in the fabrication building at Wichita’s Spirit AeroSystems early Tuesday—30 employees evacuated safely while Sedgwick County Fire District 1 responded and Spirit assessed damage to decide if operations resume later.  KSN

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday September 23, the Association of the United States Army honored Kansas hero Father Emil Kapaun in a graphic novel series that tells his story of valor from the Korean War. The graphic novel is part of the Medal of Honor series + a paperback version will be printed for the AUSA Annual Meeting.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kansas residents will soon be able to apply to colleges without fees from Oct. 6—8, as the Kansas Board of Regents waives application charges for public universities, community colleges and technical colleges. Students can apply online during the waiver period.  KSN
  • Four Wichita teenagers earned certificates from the OneHeart Project at Urban League of Kansas, which gives teens in the juvenile justice system the tools to change their paths—local leaders say the certification shows that transformation is possible. The next group will start on Oct. 6 at Marshall Middle School and Sowers Alternative High School with a cap of 12 students.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against Snap Inc. in Washington County District Court claiming Snapchat is designed to prey on children— the suit alleges the app exposes minors to unsafe content and uses features that encourage compulsive use.  KSN
  • Sedgwick County is facing a card payment outage for the second week in a row that affects many county offices — including the County Clerk and Health locations — while officials work to restore service with no set timeframe. Some departments may accept alternative payment methods, so callers are advised to check before visiting.  KWCH
  • Wichita police reported that officers responded to 184 camps since April and enforced the illegal camping law by educating individuals without giving citations—most moved on when asked to leave. City leaders and council members expressed concern about where people can go when shelters reach capacity and promised more outreach and housing support in the future.  KSN
  • Federal officials cut nearly $10.4 million in SNAP funding from Kansas after the state failed to submit the required data by Sept. 19—Governor Kelly said an appeal will be filed to prevent further disallowances and keep the program running during the investigation.  KSN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wichita doctors met on September 23 to discuss rising prescription prices—talking about new ideas to make drugs more affordable. They focused on strategies that could soon help local patients cut costs.  KWCH
  • Sedgwick County COMCARE will offer a free Mental Health First Aid Class on Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for adults and youth. Adults will meet at the Ronald Reagan Building at 271 W. 3rd Street N. + youth classes will be held at COMCARE Children’s Services at 1938 N. Woodlawn Blvd., Suite 401 + interested participants may register by emailing Michelle.Calvert.  KSN
