COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bike Walk Wichita is planning a ride across Kansas to support local refugees—organizers say the event will raise funds, increase awareness, and invite community cyclists to join the effort. The ride is set to help boost local support for refugee services and strengthen community ties.  KWCH
  • Food lovers in Wichita will support local restaurants and help the Kansas Food Bank when ICT Restaurant Week is held from Sept. 21–27. Over 30 eateries will offer specials, including unique menu items or a portion of sales, to raise funds for hunger relief.  KSN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In June, Wichita customers learned that Waste Connections took over Air Capital Waste, causing confusion with changes to pickup days and worries over price increases. Neighbors said they expect clearer updates—Waste Connections sent registration instructions in mid-August.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Field of Screams — a local haunted attraction — is nearing its opening night as spooky season begins today. Fans will soon experience a fresh thrill when the event opens.  KWCH
  • Charlie and Lynne Hunter have supported KMUW since the early 1990s, enjoying shows like 1A+Global Village and You’re Saying It Wrong; Charlie once won a spelling bee for grown-ups while Lynne works on environmental causes.   • Cox Communications is giving free tickets to Sedgwick County Zoo’s Wild Lights festival for anyone who recycles small electronics at Cox Solutions stores in Wichita from September 19 to 24. The offer—limited to two tickets per household—is available while supplies last.  The Voice

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Kansas Dept of Labor and Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest Labor Report showing a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in August, unchanged from July while labor force participation climbed to 67.0% and nonfarm payroll employment dropped by 4,700 with private and government sectors both losing jobs. The report noted that total nonfarm jobs have fallen by 10,000 since August 2024—mostly in government, despite leisure and hospitality adding over 600 positions.  KNSS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Afton in Sedgwick County is on the state's warning list for toxic blue-green algae — health officials advise people and pets to avoid the water to prevent sickness. The warning will remain until tests show the algae toxins drop to safe levels.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KDOT unveiled its Advanced Air Mobility Roadmap on Thursday that outlines how next-generation aviation, including drones and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, will improve transportation in Wichita. Joby Aviation demonstrated its aircraft with interactive simulations at the National Aviation Hall of Fame enshrinement held Friday at the B-29 Doc Hangar in west Wichita.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kapaun Crusaders improved to 2-0 after beating East 38—7 last night in Wichita as quarterback Cole Rapp scored both a rushing and a passing touchdown to build a 28—0 halftime lead.  KWCH
  • Wichita-area high school football games this week feature teams with perfect records and local rivalries as matchups like Cheney at Garden Plain and Northwest at Junction City will set up playoff seeding—predictions for other contests including Great Bend at Buhler, Haven versus Smoky Valley, and Hutchinson versus Maize add more local interest.
