COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During a severe storm last Wednesday, homeless man Nathaniel Moehring—living in a tent near Rock Road—found shelter when Marjorie Pennington, who had noticed him seeking help before, opened her car door and home to him.  FOX Kansas

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities believe a homicide suspect is hiding in a west Wichita apartment building — residents have been asked to shelter in place.  KWCH
  • Law enforcement officials said that youth violence in Wichita is rising as several deadly shootings have occurred in the last eight days with many involving teens — the police are using the Juvenile Intervention Unit to mentor at-risk youth and call on responsible gun ownership to help prevent further tragedies.  KSN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita Public Schools Board of Education passed its 2025-26 budget on Monday totaling $1,009,845,676, which includes an operating budget of $615M and the lowest mill levy rate in 15 years. Over 87% of the funds will support 46,000 students with added investments in core services, behavior supports, and ESOL programs.  KSN
  • NASA astronaut & brigadier general Nick Hague visited Christa McAuliffe Academy on Monday to talk with Wichita students about space and showed videos of his spacewalks; he will speak today at the Kansas Aviation Museum at 9 a.m. to promote STEM studies.  KSN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wichita announced that permanent outdoor water restrictions will begin on September 15 — the new rules aim to curb water use and boost long-term conservation for the city and nearby areas.  KAKE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two more men died in gun homicides over the weekend and Chief Joe Sullivan called the North Piatt killing a senseless act of violence—Mayor Lily Wu said that addressing violence starts at home by teaching respect and responsibility with help from local non-profits. At today's City Council meeting, Wu will propose raising fines for illegal trash dumping to at least $500 and discuss penalties for excessive noise and loud vehicles.  KNSS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wichita native Trey Dulaney, who has been sober for 533 days, plans a 250-mile run across Kansas in honor of Suicide Prevention Month to raise mental health awareness and share his recovery journey—he ran 108 miles last year from Stillwater to Derby.  FOX Kansas
