- ➤ Sedgwick County Zoo announced that a fourth healthy elephant calf, Dakari, was born to first-time mother Zuberi on Friday at 7:24 a.m.—the zoo will update visitors on when they can see the pair after they bond. KNSS
- ➤ Sedgwick County Zoo expanded its elephant exhibit to support a breeding herd after three baby elephants were born this year, including a 400-pound calf named Kijani who follows the 54-year-old matriarch Stephanie. The zoo spent $12.6 million to enlarge the area, and staff are preparing for a fourth calf any day now— officials say the changes meet new AZA standards. KMUW

- ➤ A motorcycle crash in west Wichita near I-235 and West Street claimed one life—emergency crews are clearing the scene and have blocked the highway for safety. KWCH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was sentenced yesterday to 55 months in prison and 36 months of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the March stabbing death of Brian Edwards in southeast Wichita near the 4100 block of E. Whitney Lane—officers said Edwards suffered a fatal stab wound to his upper body. KWCH
- ➤ Wichita man William Ball was sentenced to 55 months in corrections and 36 months of post-release supervision after pleading voluntary manslaughter for fatally stabbing 51-year-old Brian Edwards on March 10 in the 4100 block of E. Whitney Ln—investigators linked the confrontation to past sexual abuse allegations against Ball’s sister. KSN

- ➤ Hugo Phan spoke with local creators who document Wichita’s punk scene by producing zines, and librarian Daniel Pewewardy recently led a workshop at the Wichita Public Library—helping community members express themselves with DIY publications. - ➤ A new Kansas law requires some classes to show a three-minute video on baby growth in the womb, and critics say the rule pushes a pro-life agenda by leaving each school district to decide how to meet the requirement.
