ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kansas State University scientists have developed an AI tool to map woody vegetation spreading in the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie—tracking invasive eastern red cedar and shrubs that threaten ranching and wildlife. The model uses public, high-resolution aerial data to detect early encroachment and guide interventions such as prescribed burns. KMUW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Attorney General Kris Kobach announced a plan to use $177,000 to turn old news boxes into Narcan hubs across Kansas — making the life-saving drug easier to get during an opioid overdose emergency. The hubs will be set up soon if the project moves forward. FOX Kansas
- ➤ Sedgwick County commissioners approved the 2026 budget by lowering the property tax rate to its lowest level in 33 years and setting a 27.553 mill levy for a $591 million plan that funds employee pay raises and repairs to roads and facilities. Fire District 1 also cut its tax rate in a $31 million budget, and commissioners reduced spending by $640,000 from some programs — some property valuation growth was not captured. KSN
- ➤ The Wichita City Council approved a common consumption area license for Delano on Tuesday with a 7-0 vote. The rule lets adults 21+ carry alcohol from local restaurants and bars on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.—and it will start on Sept 5. Wichita By E.B.
- ➤ Wichita city council approved permanent outdoor watering restrictions that take effect Sept. 15 — the new plan sets schedules with odd-numbered addresses watering on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and even-numbered ones on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday while banning watering on Mondays and between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., affecting Wichita and 500,000 residents in surrounding areas. The measure aims to address ongoing drought concerns despite recent heavy rains. KSN
- ➤ Sedgwick County is weighing office options as the Ruffin building lease ends in 2028 and commissioners compared buying and renovating the Envision building on Main Street for $26.5 million, building a new facility at 3rd and Main for $32 million, and a smaller building for $23.5 million—Commissioner Ryan Baty said the figures guide the plan.
