CRIME NEWS

  • On July 24 near 21st and Hillside at about 6:30 a.m., Wichita police met 19-year-old Nehemiah C. Flemming who pulled a handgun from his pocket and asked about Black males carrying guns—prompting one officer to dive for cover, a second to fire three rounds, and a third to fire two rounds after Flemming ran into a parking lot, and he was pronounced dead at 6:57 a.m. after EMS took him to the hospital while investigators noted he had mental health issues and had sought to provoke a shooting.  KSN
  • Wichita police recovered human remains near Bayley and Armour in East Wichita Tuesday that are believed to belong to missing woman Mariana Christian—the Medical Examiner’s Office will confirm her identity as the investigation continues.  KSN

CULTURE NEWS

  • ICT Ball Busters, a new women’s pinball league that meets every Wednesday at The Arcade—906 E 3rd Street North—is launching a safe and competitive space in Wichita where players can build skills and camaraderie, and one member has recently become the state champion.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local leaders met Tuesday to discuss more efficient use of taxpayer dollars after nearly 140 improvement ideas were submitted at a June town hall. They focused on boosting mental health services, lowering crime and homelessness, and piloting community schools that will start the upcoming school year—an effort that may involve the county if successful.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Ted Cruz unveiled new legislation called the Rotor Act six months after Flight 5342 crashed near Reagan National Airport. The bill will require flight tracking technology for all aircraft—military and civilian—and has the support of Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall.  KWCH
