Villa Boxing Club in south Wichita was damaged by a storm on June 17, and owner Jacob Villa now hosts boxing classes on the lawn to train kids and share life lessons—while local volunteers and construction companies begin repair work.
The uninsured gym is being restored as Villa continues to serve the community.
Wichita’s homeless shelter at the former Park Elementary School on 9th and Main has been re-branded as Second Light and will undergo phased construction on one-story and two-story buildings while still offering limited services.
Board Chairman Steve Dixon said the work will occur throughout the rest of the year — ensuring the shelter remains open during renovations.
Jury deliberations are underway in the trial of Wichita mother Stephanie Aviles—charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and child endangerment in the 2019 death of her two-year-old son—after she spoke in her own defense and her boyfriend Bernardo Gonzalez-Mejia, who faces similar charges, will appear in court on July 24.
Wichita police said 27-year-old Sinay Leon-Montoya was killed after being stabbed during a domestic disturbance on Thursday near the 6800 block of West Par Lane — a man was arrested on charges that include first-degree murder and child endangerment.
