COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In the five months following the Jan. 29 midair collision involving Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army helicopter, the Wichita Foundation has distributed over $300,000 in donations from the ICT Together Fund—supporting 29 families and supplying emergency responders.  KSN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Panasonic is scaling back production at its De Soto battery plant to adjust to weaker Tesla sales and reduced EV tax credits—yet it can still collect over $800 million in taxpayer incentives because its contract does not require meeting job or wage targets. The 300-acre facility, which opened July 14, currently makes 50,000 battery cells a day and is undergoing further construction to expand capacity.  The Beacon

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Andrew Presley on suspicion of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the July 6 shooting death of Kelly Black, with officers responding at about 5:51 p.m. on the 7000 block of E. Lincoln — authorities say the investigation is ongoing.  KWCH
  • A driver in a 2022 Kia was cited on Wednesday morning in a construction zone along Interstate 70 near Junction City for driving 100 mph in a 60 mph zone—officials said the fines of $948 include charges for speeding, illegal passing, and a docket fee.  KSN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 200 people went to a forum at Wichita State University’s Marcus Welcome Center on July 15 where five District 1 candidates talked about equity issues — including housing, safety and access to fresh food — and plans to improve local policies; they will face a primary on August 5 and a general election on November 4.  KMUW
  • On Tuesday, Wichita City Council was split over new federal guidelines when it voted to have the city manager eliminate some DEI initiatives in order to comply with federal grant rules—raising constitutional concerns about local values.  FOX Kansas

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wichita firefighters say cancer is now the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths due to toxic chemical exposure and they face a 9% higher rate of cancer diagnoses and 14% higher death rates; they now receive annual screenings in a city program + and union leaders call for updated equipment and better education to lower risks.  KWCH
