- ➤ The Community Voice celebrated 30 years of service as it paid tribute to founders Billy Q. McCray and Wyvette McCray who launched the paper to fill the gap left by earlier Black newspapers. Since Wyvette’s passing in 1995, Bonita Gooch took over and modernized the publication—staying true to its mission of honest community reporting. The Voice
- ➤ The Friends of the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit is leading a capital campaign to restore the historic Riverside pagoda built in 1911 that served mainly for storage since 1935. They have raised about two-thirds of the $250,000 needed+ once renovations are complete the pagoda will become an educational and community space, and locals are invited to view it next Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. with ice cream served. - ➤ Sisters Kara Korean and Atlantiz Pete opened their second Different Type of Flava restaurant at 4601 E. 13th St. last month — in the former Miller’s Bar-B-Que — and now serve Cajun, Caribbean and Southern comfort dishes along with specialty lemonades while they await liquor license approval for alcohol drinks. The restaurant hires local youth as young as 14 — a move that boosts job training — and operates as a cashless, takeout-only service with plans to add a drive-thru once staff training is complete. - ➤ A 41-year-old man died when a vehicle struck him at 12:45 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound on‐ramp to Kellogg Drive from Tyler Road, and police said the car fled the scene—witnesses are urged to call detectives. KNSS
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A restored C-47 aircraft that led the D-Day invasion landed in Wichita this weekend at the Kansas Aviation Museum (drawing families, kids, and veterans). The museum is using the exhibit to honor the plane's historic role and share stories of World War II service. KWCH
- ➤ Carla Eckels is the Director of Organizational Culture at KMUW and hosts the R&B and gospel show Soulsations for local listeners on Sundays at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. She began her career at KMUW in 1996 and was inducted into the Kansas African American Museum’s Trailblazers Hall of Fame in 2020 for her work in broadcast journalism. - ➤ The WWII C-47 plane 'That's All, Brother' — which led the D-Day invasion — has landed in Wichita for a special exhibit at a local museum. The aircraft will be available for public view this week. KWCH
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Union Pacific Railroad officials met with residents Saturday in the 29th and Grove contamination area to update them on testing, cleanup efforts and future groundwater treatment plans—explaining that free indoor air tests have been offered to over 20 properties and further treatment systems now await permits. The meeting marks the seventh public session since contamination was first uncovered decades ago. KSN
