ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Friday morning at 9:40 a.m., an oversized load knocked over traffic cones in a westbound work zone on K-254—just west of the 45th Street North overpass—which caused a six-car chain reaction that sent one woman to the hospital with serious injuries while emergency crews cleared the backed-up traffic.  KSN

CRIME NEWS

  • Officer Kylee Lawrence, a five-year veteran with the Wichita Police Department who was off duty, died by suicide on Friday and was remembered with a moment of silence at the department’s graduation ceremony—police ask community members to support her family and colleagues.  KWCH
  • A Silver Alert is out for Harry Thomas, 68, a man with dementia who was last seen at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2600 block of S. Victoria St.—he is 6 feet tall, weighs about 275 pounds, is bald with brown eyes and a gray beard, was wearing a white tank top and white shorts, and anyone who sees him should call 911.  KSN

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend marks 70 years since the film Wichita premiered on July 13 at Miller Theatre north of Broadway and Douglas when Hollywood star Joel McCrea arrived in a Cadillac convertible with steer horns on his hood. A Wyatt Earp memorial plaque was unveiled at the city’s first jail in Cow Town—tying the event to Wichita’s cinematic history.  KNSS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday morning, Wichita held a ribbon cutting at Pracht Wetlands Park to celebrate new upgrades — the park now has a raised boardwalk, a covered area for viewing wildlife, local sculptures, and panels sharing its history. The park at 9926 West 29th Street North will add connecting trails in the coming months.  KSN
  • Residents affected by the 29th & Grove contamination site are invited to an open house today where officials will provide vital information and safety resources. The event follows recent concerns over the contamination and aims to address community questions.  KWCH
  • Large numbers of fall armyworms have been spotted in West Wichita near 119th & 135th Streets this week, with the Kansas State Research & Extension Office noting that populations are higher than last year. Residents are advised to check lawns regularly and control the caterpillars while small to prevent rapid growth into moths.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Traffic on K-15 in Derby will shift starting Monday as crews close inside lanes for temporary crossovers, and by Wednesday northbound lanes will close so that all vehicles use the southbound side—according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. The project will realign Nelson Drive, add a new east to west road and install a traffic signal, with work expected to finish in December and traffic reopening by early November.  KSN

SPORTS NEWS

  • The McBryde sisters, who are devout Muslims, grew up wrestling in Buffalo and worked with coaches to change the rules so they could wear modest, full-body uniforms that match their faith — a change that allowed them to compete at the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship in Wichita held in March. At the tournament, Zaynah and Latifah won their weight classes while Jamilah finished second.  KMUW
