- ➤ On Friday, Lt. Herbert Tennyson, a U.S. Army officer killed in World War II, was laid to rest with full military honors at Wichita’s Old Mission Cemetery—81 years after his combat death, his remains confirmed through artifact recovery by Project Recover. KWCH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Wichita police said a 44-year-old man was shot near Pawnee and Rock Road around 1 a.m. Friday and is in critical condition while officers used spike strips to end a chase—tased and arrested a 34-year-old man who fled on foot. KSN
- ➤ One person was critically injured in a downtown Wichita shooting near Washington and Douglas last Friday just after 10 p.m.—emergency crews transported the victim to a hospital. KSN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Black leaders — including members from the NAACP and Greater Wichita Ministerial League — met with Wichita Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld last fall and questioned why graduation rates rose while state assessment scores remained low. They also challenged the district's use of credit recovery programs and questioned allegations of grade-fixing at Southeast High. KMUW
- ➤ Black leaders met with Wichita School Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld last fall — questioning the district’s 84.3% graduation rate for the 2024 class amid low state test scores for Black students — and raised concerns that credit recovery programs may let students graduate without meeting state standards. - ➤ Residents in Wichita can now buy fireworks from tents open daily from 10 a.m. until midnight until July 5—while 'safe and sane' fireworks may be launched starting at 10 a.m. Friday, aerial fireworks are permitted only beginning July 3 with fines for violations starting at $1,000. KNSS
- ➤ Sedgwick County held a collaborative emergency training exercise on June 27 in Wichita that brought together multiple agencies to practice coordinated emergency response — county officials said the drill will boost readiness for future incidents. KWCH
