ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday evening, the Wichita Fire Department responded to a tree trimming accident on South Madison Street when a worker fell and a heavy branch—estimated at 150 pounds falling from 25 feet—nearly struck a medic and a firefighter; the hit firefighter is expected to return next week while the conditions of the medic and patient remain unconfirmed. - ➤ Wichita’s first Raising Cane’s opened Tuesday at the Maple—Ridge corner as a large crowd gathered overnight to try the restaurant’s fried chicken, and at 9 a.m. a raffle awarded 20 customers free Cane’s for a year. KWCH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Brice Berk, a former Cloud County corrections officer who served until March, was arrested on Monday at 4:35 p.m. after he turned himself in at the Republic County Sheriff’s Office and was booked on a $20,000 bond for 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child—evidence was seized from his home following a cyber-tip. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials held a public hearing Tuesday to discuss a $36 million, three-year project to address dangerous flooding on Bleckley Street in the Crown Heights neighborhood—residents expressed concern about the plan’s effect on local curb appeal. The project, set to start next week, will clear an 80-foot swathe and install a sewer drainage pipe to reduce flood levels from feet to inches. KSN
- ➤ Cheney Lake has improved to within six inches below normal, but city officials say Stage 2 water restrictions will stay in place until next March — these rules ban watering on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on other days. City leaders stress that water conservation is vital since a 12-month average pool level will guide any future changes. KWCH
- ➤ Wichita City Council will discuss adjustments to local sales and property taxes and may lower the mill levy by half a mill for the first time in over 30 years as part of the proposed 2026 operating budget. - ➤ Wichita Police Department received approval from the City Council to apply for a grant from the COPS School Violence Protection Program that would let teachers contact police directly using an app during emergencies — the technology aims to reduce response times and save lives.
