  • A storm that produced winds as high as 101 mph at Eisenhower International Airport caused widespread damage across Wichita and surrounding areas. The storms moved from northwest Kansas Monday evening, uprooting trees and damaging fences — and leaving many residents without power.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wichita City Council approved an ordinance today to counter rising car thefts and unauthorized towing, setting a minimum penalty of 30 days in jail + $100 fine for the first offense. The new move over law, which mirrors a state law, will go into effect July 1.  KNSS
  • Wichita school district leaders asked the financial oversight committee to recommend a new bond issue after voters rejected a $450 million proposal, as part of a plan to fund over $1 billion in needed school repairs and upgrades. The 24-member committee meets today to review proposals ranging from $390 million to $480 million, and the board may schedule a vote in November or at a special election next March.  KMUW

HEALTH NEWS

  • New estimates show that 75,000 Kansans and 210,000 Missourians will lose Medicaid coverage while 43,000 Kansans and 150,000 Missourians will lose SNAP benefits by 2034 if new work requirements are approved—figures that experts say could strain support systems. Lawmakers are debating these cuts—steps that may force rural hospitals and local businesses to adjust services in affected communities.  The Beacon
