COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A shed once used for storage at Our Daily Bread Food Pantry has been turned into a 24/7 non-perishable food donation bin by Catholic Charities of Wichita—this change makes it easier for local community members to help feed families in need.  KSN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three people died and three others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Butler County on Wednesday night; the crash happened around 10 pm at Southeast Flinthills Road and Highway 400 between Leon and Beaumont — the injured were taken to Wichita hospitals.  KNSS

CRIME NEWS

  • A crash in Butler County on SE Flinthills Road and Highway 400 at around 10:10 p.m. on June 12 left three dead—including a Wichita teacher, his son, and his nephew—and three in critical condition after a Chevrolet truck, believed to be driven by an impaired driver, hit a Toyota Tacoma head-on between Leon and Beaumont.  KWCH
  • A Hutchinson man aged 39 was sentenced to life in prison for child sex crimes that include raping a 15-year-old and committing aggravated indecent liberties with a 12-year-old — his sentence requires a mandatory minimum of 40 years on the lesser charge plus an additional 27.5 years for the rape conviction, and he must register as a sex offender.  KWCH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At a public hearing, Evergy proposed a $196 million annual rate increase that would add about $13 to the average bill—customers voiced their worries about the extra cost—while the utility defended its move to recoup nearly $1 billion spent on Kansas energy projects. Additional public comments will be accepted on June 16 at Washburn Institute of Technology.  KSN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday afternoon, the Kansas Board of Regents approved tuition hikes for public universities as Wichita State’s tuition will rise 3.5%, University of Kansas by 3%, Kansas State by 3.5% for its main campus and 8% for its Salina campus, and Pittsburg State by 2.5% while Emporia State kept tuition unchanged. Some Wichita State students expressed worry about increased debt from the hikes—adding to concerns about the affordability of higher education.  KSN
  • Wichita school leaders are investigating possible grade tampering at Southeast High School after records were reportedly altered to inflate graduation rates—retired educators raised concerns about similar practices at other schools. Officials replaced the principal and stressed that maintaining record integrity is essential to protect the value of a high school diploma.  KMUW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Cindy Holscher announced her candidacy for governor on June 12—she aims to address local economic and education issues—and stated her intention to build a campaign that supports everyday Kansans.  KWCH
  • A Wichita State University report found that homelessness cost Wichita and Sedgwick County at least $20.2 million last year, with over $11 million from public spending and nearly $9 million in nonprofit services – local businesses also reported property damage and police answered more than 6,600 related calls in 2024. Nigel Soria from the Public Policy and Management Center said code inspectors spent up to a quarter of their time on these issues and nonprofits remain under-resourced, urging further research to help guide future policy.  KSN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported five new measles cases this week—four in Haskell County and one in Gray County—bringing the statewide total to 76 cases across 11 counties with three hospitalizations. Health officials recommend that children receive the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to help prevent further spread.  KSN
