CRIME NEWS

  • Reno County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a white male driver about 65 who struck a public works employee using a newer-model Nissan Frontier with a handicap placard—authorities say he was cussing and screaming while the worker was not injured.  KWCH
  • Cure Violence ICT launched a program aimed at ending gun violence in Wichita. The initiative will work with law enforcement and community groups to use conflict resolution and outreach to lower violence.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robinson Middle School student Tanya Ramesh won the Kansas Civics Bee state final on Thursday — earning a $1,000 prize and a spot in the national competition this fall in Washington, D.C. — as 15 students from across the state competed in an event that was part of Youth Civics Day proclaimed by Gov. Laura Kelly.  KWCH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kansas health and parks officials reported that blue-green algae advisories were issued on June 6 for several lakes after harmful blooms were detected, including Atchison City Lake #9 and Atchison State Fishing Lake in Atchison County—residents are urged to avoid water contact to prevent health issues for people and pets.  KSN
  • Warm temperatures and flooding earlier this week have created ideal conditions for mosquitoes in south-central Kansas—residents may face more bites as puddles and stagnant water increase breeding. Horticulturalist Matt McKernan advises homeowners to drain standing water from their yards and use insect repellent during peak mosquito activity.  KWCH
