Wichita hosts a busy weekend from May 30 to June 1 with events such as downtown Riverfest, a tent sale at Wichita Furniture & Mattress, a garden tour at the Sedgwick County Extension Office, and film showings at the Wichita Foundation Amphitheater.
Additional activities include food truck rallies, live improv, and local markets (times and locations vary), giving residents many ways to celebrate the weekend.
The 53rd annual Wichita River Festival is underway for nine days with food, music, and family fun including a parade, hot air balloon launch, and fireworks.
Riverfest is ticketless and cashless—buttons cost $20 for adults and $10 for children—and vendors accept only credit and debit cards.
The Miss Juneteenth ICT pageant will be held on Sun.
June 8 at Wichita State University Duerksen Fine Arts Center — doors open at 2 p.m. and the show starts at 3 p.m.; the event features six high school contestants competing for the title while current titleholder Tiana Hardwell will represent the pageant as Miss Juneteenth ICT Teen at the Miss Kansas Teen competition in Pratt.
Wichita State announced on Friday that Vice President of Student Affairs Teri Hall will retire following the fall semester—she was hired in 2017 to manage student life and now plans to move to Delaware to conserve marine wildlife—and the university will launch a national search for her replacement with further details coming soon.
After a four-day delay from bad weather, City of Wichita pools opened Friday from 1-5 p.m. & splash pads opened at 10 a.m. Aquatics supervisor Joe Marten announced the change and exchanged remarks with meteorologist Jake Dunne.
Today, Todds Creole Kitchen opened in the old Hurricane Sports Grill space in northwest Wichita to offer classic Cajun dishes like oysters, gumbo, and crawfish étouffée.
The restaurant is run by the team behind Todd Brian’s Brick Street Cafe and Tavern and serves customers Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
State agents seized The Anchor restaurant near Old Town after it owed over $32,000 in taxes, and auctions will offer more than half an acre of prime real estate along East Douglas along with business assets.
The first auction starts June 4 at 9 a.m.—and an online auction of the property will run from July 1 until July 9.
Wichita State finished Phase One renovations at Cessna Stadium, adding seating for 5,800, a ticket pavilion, updated restrooms and a new plaza—set to host the state track meet that began Friday and will continue until this evening.
Phase Two renovations will start after the meet to minimize disruptions.
