COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Wichita nonprofit will host a cancer research fundraiser to support new treatment efforts. Organizers said the event will include community activities + donation opportunities, and more details will be shared soon.  KWCH
  • The Society of Child Entrepreneurs is hosting a free Children’s Business Fair for 40 child entrepreneurs this Sunday, May 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Douglas and Main Street as part of Wichita Riverfest, where kids learn real-world business skills.  Wichita By E.B.
  • Six one-week-old puppies abandoned behind a tire at a local Walmart were reunited by McPherson police with their mother and taken to an animal shelter — the mother will remain there until the puppies are adopted as officials propose stricter pet abandonment laws.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • KWCH 12 News won two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for its news documentary 'Without Warning' and newscast 'The Day After Flight 5342' — the winners will now advance to a national competition in New York City in October.  KWCH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wichita State’s National Institute for Aviation Research broke ground on a new Hexcel Applications Center designed to test faster composite production techniques on campus. Tom Gentile (Hexcel’s former Spirit AeroSystems chief) said the center will help boost narrow-body aircraft production from 10 to 12 to 50 to 70 per month.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita libraries kicked off a summer reading program on May 28, offering free activities for children and adults at local branches throughout the season. Participants can explore new titles and join community events.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kelly and Sedgwick County commissioners toured the new 104-bed South Central Regional Mental Health Hospital, Wichita's first state hospital in 112 years, on Tuesday. The facility near Meridian & MacArthur Road will start accepting patients in 2027 and serve Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Harvey, and Sumner counties.  KNSS
  • Wichita’s new transit center nears opening and will offer improved transit services for local riders; officials plan a formal launch in the coming weeks.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kids at Price-Harris Elementary raised $1,600 during a 'tattoo a teacher' event as part of Blood Cancer United's fundraising drive to help families get cancer treatments; donors can text (Kansas to 53555) for a chance to win a vehicle, and the fundraiser ends Saturday.  KWCH

  • The Wichita Wind Surge will host a tattoo sleeve giveaway at its home game on Thursday, June 4 at Equity Bank Park. Ticket buyers from June 2 through June 6 can get half-price offers when showing their Wichita Riverfest button (no autograph event has been confirmed).  Wichita By E.B.
