CRIME NEWS

  • Michael A. Gonzalez, 23, was arraigned in Sedgwick County on Wednesday after being charged with burglary, criminal desecration, theft and property damage at Wichita St. Patrick Catholic Church on N. Arkansas, and he pleaded not guilty while his case will continue on July 25 as he remains in jail on a $500,000 bond with the church estimating losses over $40,000.  KSN
  • 23-year-old Michael Gonzalez was arraigned on felony charges (burglary and criminal desecration) and misdemeanor charges (theft and criminal damage to property) after vandalizing a Wichita Catholic church in March; he remains in custody on a bond set slightly above $500,000 with a pretrial conference scheduled for July 25.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 2025 Somewhere Festival and Conference will take over downtown Wichita June 13—14 with headliners like Deadmau5, Suki Waterhouse, Flying Lotus, and BigXthaPlug set to perform. The event will feature a new free space called Where Else House—an immersive art installation from 21 local artists and local graffiti that aims to transform the festival atmosphere.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita Public Schools launched its Free Summer Meal program on Wednesday to offer free breakfast and lunch to students under 18 at 33 sites. Registration for grab-and-go meals at Southeast High School for June 4 closes Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and the program runs through July 25.  KWCH
  • University of Kansas archaeology students are digging in a field near Parsons to find evidence from the suspected home of the Bloody Benders, a 19th-century family believed to have killed about 20 travelers—so far, they have uncovered a large ceramic piece near a well and will continue searching for more artifacts.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that six more people contracted measles since last week — one of whom is hospitalized. The total has reached 64 cases across 11 counties, mostly among unvaccinated children amid an outbreak in southwest Kansas.  KSN
