  • Today, 12-year-old Ava Johnson donated 5,000 essentials at her fourth annual Socks and Undies Drive for EmberHope (a fundraiser for foster children) in Wichita. The event has grown from a small parking lot collection to a brunch with ticket sales.  KWCH
  • Wichita’s Riverfest returns for its 54th year starting May 29 and running until June 6, featuring rides, hot air balloons, and live music along the river. A button (available for purchase locally) is required for entry.  KAKE

  • Former Stroud’s owner Kevin Allis took over Boudreaux’s Burger Barn in Peck earlier this year and hired a new management team to keep the restaurant's traditions alive. He said he will use modest price increases to help maintain quality amid rising costs.  KWCH

  • Comedian Olivia Carter (a Kansas native) competed on Netflix's Funny AF hosted by Kevin Hart and reached the top four, which gave her career a boost. She will book a tour and increase her social media presence for further exposure.  KWCH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local auto shops are monitoring rising synthetic oil prices that have jumped (15-20%) as the motor oil supply tightens, which may soon raise repair costs. Vendors say supplies remain steady today but warn adjustments could follow if the trend continues.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita State University has renamed University Stadium to Crossland Stadium, recognizing Crossland Construction’s support — the venue will host the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship and new improvements will begin next month.  KNSS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wichita RiverWalk Cleanup Crew has had issues with paid parking at the Kellogg lot since last year, which now makes it harder for volunteers to start cleaning the Arkansas River. City Council met with the group a few months ago but has not provided any waiver so far.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials updated residents on the Wichita water plant yesterday, noting scheduled improvements to boost service and operational efficiency. More details will be shared as the work progresses.  KWCH

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Derby Shores broke ground on Tuesday afternoon after delays and construction will begin for a nearly four acre artificial lagoon with sandy beaches. The $160 million project approved in 2022 is set to open its first phase in 12 to 18 months and will add a hotel and apartments.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the NCAA Div. II National Track and Field Championships at Emporia State, Kansas athletes earned All-American honors; Pitt State’s Breanne Peters won the pole vault with a 4.25m clearance Thursday — while other Kansas stars placed in sprint, jump and throw events as finals approach.  KWCH
