COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wichitans braved strong winds and rain yesterday to honor the service members who lost their lives, and city leaders, veterans — and families gathered to pay their respects on Memorial Day.  KAKE
  • Yesterday in Resthaven, community members gathered to honor veterans who sacrificed everything for the nation. Local officials and family members offered tributes to remember the service and bravery of these heroes.  KWCH

CRIME NEWS

  • Early Sunday morning, Wichita Police responded to a shooting in the 700 block of S Laura where 20-year-old pregnant Naomi Oglesby was fatally shot and doctors delivered her baby successfully while the 19-year-old suspect Matthew Criscenzo is in custody facing first-degree murder and additional charges.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wichita’s 2025 Riverfest will run from May 30 to June 7 and promises a week of volunteer work, parades, live music, and fireworks with events beginning Friday at 11:30 a.m. Local organizers and community partners will host activities (such as a 50/50 raffle drawing and family races) to celebrate the city’s vibrant culture (check official guides for times and locations).  Wichita By E.B.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After rain fell yesterday, Cheney Lake water levels improved only slightly, local officials said—warning that the lake remains below normal for this time of year. They expect more rain will be needed to raise the levels further.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ascension Via Christi leaders said women are at higher risk for stroke than men and 55,000 more women die from stroke each year. The CDC reports one in five women aged 55 to 75 may have a stroke and experts note that high blood pressure from pregnancy and hormonal factors can increase that risk.  KSN

  • Wichitans are taking part in the Murph Challenge, a high-intensity workout that honors Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy who died in Afghanistan in 2005 — the event tests endurance and mental strength like military training.  KSN
