COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Butler County EMS paramedic Justin Lauppe, who served 14 years, died on May 16 after a cardiac arrest during an emergency call. A public viewing from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and a memorial service at 1 p.m. will be held at Park City Arena on May 22 — giving family, friends and colleagues a chance to pay their respects.  KWCH
  • Reno County VOAD announced a Multi-Agency Resource Center at Abbyville Community Church that will operate from 4 to 6 pm Tuesday and again from 4 to 6 pm Wednesday to help people recovering from Sunday night's tornado in Plevna. The American Red Cross opened a 24-hour emergency shelter at Abbyville Community Center to provide food, water and power while volunteers can call the Reno County Volunteer Center to help with cleanup and donations.  KWCH

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A woman was rushed to a Wichita hospital in critical condition after a fire broke out early Monday morning on the 12400 block of S. Jordan Springs Road in Reno County—firefighters controlled the blaze in 45 minutes after it spread to a camper and garage following a tornado that hit the area.  KSN

CRIME NEWS

  • Crawford Liquor and Smoke Shop in South Wichita was robbed on May 5 at 3:30 p.m. near 47th Street South and Seneca — a man with a gun demanded cash and the owner asks anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers for a reward up to $2,500.  FOX Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday night, a tornado hit the Liggett property in Kiowa County, destroying outbuildings and leaving only the house standing during the 45-second storm—neighbors quickly offered help to the 42-year residents. Nearby, the storm also toppled train cars by Haviland and damaged fields near Pratt, signaling a long recovery for local farms.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Kenny Titus said a new law lets police put cameras on utility poles and shields utility companies from lawsuits—giving them a free pass to approve surveillance requests. He will propose limits next year to cut down on warrantless monitoring and better protect the privacy of Kansans.  The Beacon
  • Bandit, a well-loved K-9 assigned to Deputy Joel McLaughlin, died on Sunday with no cause given; the dog had moved with McLaughlin from the Andover Police Department to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office in December 2023 (certified as a dual-purpose patrol dog by the Kansas Police Dog Association).  KWCH

  • McAdams Tennis Foundation is launching its annual free tennis program at the McAdams Park tennis courts, offering classes for all ages and skill levels. The spring sessions run from May 13 to 29 and summer sessions from June 3 to July 24 with lessons on Tuesday & Thursday evenings.  The Voice
