COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Religious leaders in Sedgwick County met Thursday to discuss affordable housing and homelessness and urged local officials to support Wichita’s multi-agency housing center. They warned that increased affordable tax credit limits starting in 2026 may make housing even harder to secure—prompting calls for immediate action.  KWCH

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Derby firefighters responded to an incident where children intentionally set a laptop on fire following a TikTok trend that teaches use of lithium batteries—officials warned the flames risked explosion and harmful fumes.  KWCH
  • Hector Rios, a Wichita optometrist and recreational kayaker, was reported missing on May 3 after separating from his group and was found dead in the Mulberry River in Arkansas on Thursday afternoon—confirmed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.  KWCH

CRIME NEWS

  • Six individuals were charged with possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine from a smuggling operation that used a charter bus to transport liquid meth from Mexico to Emporia—law enforcement tracked the bus after a canine alert on May 4 led them to a rural property.  KWCH

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alice Cooper and Judas Priest will co-headline a tour at Intrust Bank Arena on October 8, with Cooper debuting an all-new show and Corrosion-of-Conformity joining as support. Tickets will go on sale Friday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. via Select-A-Seat Box Office, phone, or online.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KDOT will close a section of K-15 at the BNSF railroad crossing east of Udall next week — the closure begins on May 14 and will last through May 17 if weather permits with traffic detours using K-55, U.S. 81, U.S. 160 and U.S. 77.  KSN
  • The Kansas Department of Transportation will close northbound and southbound I-135 for construction today until May 11—southbound from the K-254 to past K-96 and northbound at the K-96/I-135 interchange—and drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and follow detour signs.  KNSS
  • Community activist Aujanae Bennett filed to run for Wichita City Council District 1, as the seat is open when Councilman Brandon Johnson reaches his term limit. A Wichita native who led a neighborhood association and exposed a toxic spill, Bennett joins candidates Joseph Shepard and LaWanda DeShazer and will focus on boosting transparency, mental health, and affordable housing — key parts of her platform.  The Voice

HEALTH NEWS

  • Darrell Gails, a Black father who once worked in Wichita Public Schools, shared how he noticed early signs in his daughter Carter, including little eye contact and delayed speech, which led to her autism diagnosis. He credits strong family support and faith for helping her thrive and urges other Black parents to look for signs early + seek help when needed.  The Voice

  • Kansas Speedway hosts its 39th NASCAR Cup Series race weekend with Friday’s ARCA Menards Series race, today’s Truck Series practice sessions, and Sunday’s Cup Series race on Mother’s Day. The event features special attractions—such as NASCAR moms serving as grand marshals and a KC-135 flyover from a Wichita airbase—alongside digital tickets and free general parking in grass lots.  KSN
