COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ASEZ WAO volunteers cleaned up Wichita’s Planeview Park on Sunday—Wichita City Council member Mike Hoheisel also joined the effort.  KSN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • FedEx announced it will close its South Hoover Road facility in Wichita in June as part of a network transition, affecting 72 employees. The company said it will offer job placement assistance and severance—while customers will receive prompt package service.  KSN

CRIME NEWS

  • Wichita Police are asking for help in locating a missing woman as they believe 20-year-old Haley Ann Davis, who was last seen on August 10th in Saline County nearly two years ago, is dead—anyone with information is urged to call Detective Owen.  KSN
  • Katelyn Barrioz, 24—whose stolen vehicle crashed near 29th and Rock Road in October 2024, killing Mandy Buckwalter—was sentenced to 230 months in prison by Judge Seth Rundle.  KWCH
  • A judge sentenced 24-year-old Katelyn Barrioz to over 19 years in prison for a crash that killed Heartspring employee Mandy Buckwalter on Oct. 28th in northeast Wichita when a stolen van fleeing a police chase hit her Chevy Cobalt—Barrioz had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and other related charges.  KNSS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Wichita State, faculty and students criticized the library for discarding thousands of books and journals without notifying them—raising concerns about losing unique research materials. The library said it follows standard guidelines and will meet with the English and history departments on May 2 and May 9 to discuss these issues.  The Sunflower
  • Wichita State University announced Sarah Beth Estes as the new dean of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on Monday morning. She will assume the role from interim dean David Eichhorn on July 6—bringing her experience from UALR to support R1 initiatives.  The Sunflower

HEALTH NEWS

  • Critics say that the national organ transplant system remains broken as 105,000 patients wait for organs while hospitals in Kansas list 502 patients and Missouri hospitals list 1,998, with most needing kidneys. Recent reforms aim to improve organ use, but inefficiencies and outdated protocols still cause many donated kidneys to go unused—threatening those in need.  The Beacon

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Downtown Wichita is set for changes as research shows the area has 3,000 housing units with nearly 95% occupancy—Executive Director Heather Schroeder said developers can begin adding 600—700 units per year to eventually increase housing by 3,700 units over the next five years.  KWCH
