  • Ability Point introduced Helping Hand, a new program that will offer support and assistance for local residents. The initiative will begin soon — providing volunteer opportunities and resources to strengthen community ties.  KWCH

  • Two May Day rallies will take place in Wichita on Friday, May 1. Defend Democracy ICT hosts ICT May Day from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Chester I. Lewis Reflection Square Park + a climate rally calls for taxing fuel companies from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Delano Clock Tower.  The Voice

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tornado-producing storm injured one person in Sycamore and snapped nine power lines along U.S. 75 on Sunday night — causing widespread outages and a Monday cancellation of Columbus school district classes as Montgomery County search crews begin damage assessments today.  KWCH

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wichita officials announced plans on Apr. 27 for a local facility to manufacture the MV-75 Cheyenne. Production will begin later this year to boost the city’s growing aerospace sector.  KWCH

  • Students in Wichita are exploring careers that are less likely to be automated, aiming to secure jobs that require a human touch. Career centers and local schools are offering guidance for building A.I.-proof skills as the job market evolves.  KWCH
  • Faculty Senate President Chris Stone is leaving WSU after seven years as Department of Management chair to start a tenured position at Marist University in the fall. Stone said he sought a role that better fits his expertise (he will enjoy teaching smaller classes in person).  The Sunflower
  • WSU students express concern over artificial intelligence as more businesses adopt the new technology — a Harvard Youth poll shows 59% worry about job prospects. University advisors stress that learning to work with AI is key to staying competitive.  KWCH

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • KETCH and Vintage Construction broke ground on Julia’s Place at Maple & Julia Streets in west Wichita Monday. The affordable housing project will include four apartment buildings to house 32 adults with developmental disabilities and is set to open in 2027.  KWCH
  • Officials held a groundbreaking for new low-income housing in west Wichita yesterday — the project is designed to provide affordable homes for local families.  KWCH
