CRIME NEWS

  • Peyton Allart, a 20-year-old Wichita woman, was sentenced to three years’ probation for a hit-and-run that killed 28-year-old Jaz Brooks last summer—she faces a 31-month prison term if she violates her probation.  KWCH
  • In February 2024, a Wichita police officer who was deleting emails on his patrol car struck and killed Jeffrey Moss on MacArthur and no criminal charges were filed, leaving his daughter Jordan Moss seeking answers and urging stricter patrol guidelines (supported by documents gathered by her attorney).  KWCH
  • A 26-year-old Wichita man was sentenced to life in prison without parole—serving a minimum of 54 years—after a Sedgwick County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting that killed a 1-year-old child and injured two women on Feb. 19.  KSN
  • A 34-year-old Wichita man named Craig Steele was charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm after police linked him to a fatal shooting on South Broadway last week during an altercation in a motel parking lot on April 17—his bail was set at $1 million and his next court date is May 5.  KSN
  • Wichita police are asking for help finding 61-year-old Kevin McClellan, a man with special needs who left his assisted living facility on Wednesday and was last seen near Harry — Woodlawn pushing a shopping cart while wearing an olive green t-shirt and a ball cap, and anyone with information is urged to call 911 immediately.  KWCH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local tire shop owners are urging customers to buy new tires now as tariffs on imported tires will soon raise prices—possibly up to 25% per tire. The new tariffs take effect May 3 and some shops have already raised prices by 8%.  FOX Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The westbound K-96 ramp to Hydraulic Avenue in Wichita will close Tuesday, April 29, until early winter for the installation of a temporary concrete safety barrier and striping work as part of phase 2B of the North Junction Gold Project+ drivers must use alternate routes.  KSN
  • Kansas law enforcement is hosting a safe drug takeback event today to prevent unused prescription drugs from getting into the wrong hands. Over 200 drop-off sites are set up statewide, with Sedgwick County locations (Sedgwick County Zoo, the household hazardous waste facility and the Dole VA) open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 170,000 bottles of Martinelli’s apple juice were recalled in March after tests found possible patulin contamination— a toxin that may cause nausea and vomiting, with the recall still ongoing as the FDA warns of temporary health risks.  KSN
