- ➤ Volunteers will work on Saturday to spruce up downtown Wichita from 9 a.m. to noon. Local groups and businesses will tackle trash pickup, graffiti removal, and painting tasks—Evergy and Wichita Wagonmasters will serve a complimentary lunch after the event. KSN
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Bridely Boutique has moved to the historic Dockum Building at 3200 E. Douglas and now offers three spacious fitting rooms with a selection of dresses from independent and European designers—special items for mothers of the bride and groom are also available. The Grand Opening event will be on May 18 from 12—5 p.m. with fashion shows at 1 and 3 p.m.—the event is free and open to the public. KWCH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ After a detention deputy received burns when James Chavez threw boiling water in the Adult Detention Facility, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office banned hot pots—Chavez now faces an aggravated battery charge. KSN
- ➤ Sedgwick County Jail removed all hot pots after an inmate attacked a detention deputy by throwing scalding water that caused burns — inmates now use heated water only from taps while the accused faces an aggravated battery charge. KWCH
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Following Pope Francis' passing Monday morning, Wichita leaders and Newman University remembered his legacy, linking his care for the marginalized to Newman’s mission—J.V. Johnston recalled a 2019 pilgrimage to Rome where the Pope's humility inspired him. Carrocci, Newman’s former president, noted that his respect for liberal arts and compassionate leadership will serve as a model for local efforts. KSN
- ➤ Brian Miller's Simply Sangria on 243 N. Cleveland in Wichita won top awards this month at the American Sangria Challenge for his Cherry Limeade and Blackberry sangrias—he also hosts cultural events like Simply Poetry nights and will serve mimosas at Create Campaign’s Power Brunch on April 29. The shop continues to expand its role as a vibrant community hub celebrating Black artistry. The Voice

- ➤ Wichita Public Schools announced the passing of Dr. William Polite, its Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, and Accountability for more than seven years—Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld described him as a mentor and community advocate. KWCH
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Senate Bill 29, a new Kansas law, stops health departments from banning public gatherings during an outbreak and lets residents sue if their rights are hurt — Sen. Michael Murphy said county commissioners can still order quarantines if a serious threat emerges. Wichita Rep. Tom Sawyer warned the law might hamper quick action as measles and TB outbreaks continue to challenge public safety. KWCH
- ➤ Today, the Wichita City Council will begin its search for a new City Manager as Robert Layton retires at the end of the year—Mayor Lily Wu said a consultant is expected to charge about $70,000 and invited public comments on the process. A workshop will follow the meeting to focus on the city’s budget. KNSS
