COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers will gather for the Downtown Wichita Clean-Up on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at 501 E. Douglas Ave to paint, landscape, and collect trash, and Evergy will serve a complimentary lunch afterward. The free event welcomes community participation.  KNSS
  • Connie Palacioz, Wichita’s 'Rosie the Riveter' who started at Boeing at 17 and later volunteered on the restored DOC for 26 years, died at 101. Her decades of work helped preserve an important part of local history.  KNSS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vorshay’s Cocktail Lounge in downtown Wichita is set to close in two weeks after eight years in business — the owner says rising costs and decreased sales prompted the decision.  KWCH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wichita Public Schools is launching its second annual Community Engagement Survey this month to collect resident views on student achievement, safety, and overall satisfaction + the results will guide decisions and be shared with the Board this summer.  KWCH
  • Community members attended USD 259's fifth listening session for bond proposals on Monday, Apr. 20 at the district meeting space, where they discussed upcoming funding plans to improve local schools.  KWCH
  • Wichita State is seeking a 4% tuition increase to help cover a $900,000 budget shortfall after state funding dropped by nearly 3.5%. The university will report its financial proposals in May as officials review program performance and future budget plans.  The Sunflower

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ladybugs are unusually common this spring after warmer February and March temperatures helped them multiply early, experts from K-State Extension Office said. Local gardeners and yard workers may see these beneficial insects boosting natural balance.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bel Aire will begin reconstructing Woodlawn on Monday in a four-phase project that will improve the roadway from Quail Ridge to 45th and finish in summer 2027; phases one through three will fully close segments for detours while phase four will have intermittent lane closures.  KWCH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials warn that tick season is starting early as warmer weather brings more ticks to Wichita. Residents should protect themselves by wearing long sleeves and using repellent (DEET), and pet owners are urged to use tick prevention medications.  KWCH
  • A Wichita-area woman is hosting a giveback fundraiser at Bubba’s 33 today to support blood cancer patients and their families, with 10 percent of sales donated to Blood Cancer United. The event includes raffle prizes, a photo booth and outdoor games (from 5 to 8 p.m.) near Towne East Square.  KWCH

  • Kansas runners are competing in the Boston Marathon today. Local athletes from Wichita clubs aim to finish strong on the historic course.  KWCH
