- ➤ Sedgwick County Zoo announced that a new African elephant calf named Kijani was born on April 14 and is bonding with first-time mom Xolani—this safe arrival comes just days after Bomani's birth on April 10 as the herd adjusts to the new family members. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Two people were injured, including one critically, when a crash occurred Wednesday evening on westbound Kellogg near I-235, and police closed the roadway from West Street to I-235—significantly affecting traffic in west Wichita. KWCH
- ➤ A house fire burned the second story of a home on S. Water near Zimmerly in southwest Wichita around 3 a.m. on Wednesday and firefighters put out the blaze while police began investigating. KWCH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Vivian Donia, an 83-year-old woman with memory issues, left her assisted living home near West Central Avenue and North 159th Street in Andover with her walker at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide Silver Alert—anyone who sees her is urged to call 911. - ➤ Edward Altum, 71, from Newton was sentenced to 17 years in prison by Harvey County Judge Michael X. Llamas for killing his wife Peggy on December 15th, 2023—police said he was seen leaving their home with his hands raised after a 911 call reported a shooting. KWCH
- ➤ Jeremy Wycoff appeared in Sedgwick County District Court on April 16th, charged with arson & aggravated arson for starting a fire near the Orpheum Theatre that burned a pile of building materials without causing damage to the theater or injuries, and his bond was set at $150,000 with a preliminary hearing scheduled later this month. - ➤ Sedgwick County is preparing for more federal grant cuts that could affect all departments, including Health and Human Services — after losing $430,000 in cuts on March 24 — by using a 60-day plan to secure new funding or change services and staffing. KWCH
