COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Sedgwick County Zoo welcomed its second African elephant calf—Kijani, born on Monday to first-time mother Xolani following Bomani’s birth on April 10. Zoo staff said both mother and calf are healthy and will be closely monitored before joining the herd. KWCH
- ➤ The Kansas Honor Flight, an all-volunteer group that honors veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam, took its 100th flight last year and will make its 102nd trip later this month. KWCH—DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers donated $1,200 to help fund future flights, and flight leader Kenny White said all eligible veterans should sign up soon. KWCH
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The BBB warns that personal data might be at risk as a study found more than 16,000 high-level identity theft reports since 2021, with many cases occurring around tax season. The agency advises residents to review credit reports, use multi-factor authentication and choose strong, unique passwords to help protect their information. KWCH
- ➤ Todd Donovan, 54, pleaded guilty to shooting his wife Sheila and their 22-year-old son Tyler during a standoff on November 1, 2024—he said he took their lives at their home. KAKE
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers did not deliver the big property tax cuts promised and only passed a small 1.5 mill reduction that saves about $40 for an average home. Lawmakers said they will work on more tax relief next session—many homeowners remain worried about rising costs. The Beacon
- ➤ On Tuesday, Wichita City Council considered a proposal from Commonwealth Development Corporation to build a 42-unit low-income housing project on South Broadway (seeking $9.2 million in bonds) with no set construction start date. The Council also discussed funding Riverfest, with proposals to allocate $40,000 for sponsorship and $135,000 for public safety (with the festival set from May 30th to June 7th). KWCH

- ➤ Children’s Mercy previewed designs for an 18,000-square-foot clinic in northeast Wichita on Tuesday at 28th St. N. and Greenwich to serve over 10,000 pediatric patients. The clinic will offer more than 30 specialty services — including cardiology, endocrinology, and nephrology — and is scheduled to open in summer 2026. KSN
