- ➤ Sedgwick County Zoo announced the birth of a healthy African elephant calf named Bomani on April 10 — the male calf was born to mother Talia and both are doing well. This first successful elephant birth at the zoo follows years of careful planning to support African elephant conservation. KNSS
- ➤ The first Open Streets ICT event outside Wichita State University drew about 9,000 people on Sunday with 100 vendors and 25 volunteers managing activity booths along nearly three-and-a-half miles of 17th Street — organizers said that live painting and health services were among the resources offered. Organizers said the next event will be held in May at Nomar Plaza. KSN

- ➤ A 44-year-old Nickerson man named Bruce Stoecklein died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Reno County near 56th Avenue and Nickerson Boulevard at around 3:35 p.m. on Sunday when his motorcycle left the road and hit a ditch. KWCH
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At four Wichita pilot schools, teachers have shifted schedules to provide about 40 minutes a day of self-directed free play—known as purposeful play—to help kindergartners build social skills amid rising academic pressures. District leaders will expand the program to at least 10 more schools this fall to address concerns over excessive screen time. KMUW
