COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sunday’s Open Streets ICT brought many families to a two-mile stretch on 17th St in the Shocker neighborhood. The next event will be on May 4—setting up a route from NoMar Market to Woodland Park.  KWCH
  • On Sunday, April 13th, Open Streets ICT closed streets on 17th Street between Oliver and Volusia so people could walk, bike or skate. The event had vendors, food trucks and live performances by groups from WSU and local schools—bringing community fun to the area.  KWCH
  • The Urban League of Wichita will posthumously honor Kiah Duggins—Wichita native and civil rights attorney—with the Emerging Leader Award at its Equal Opportunity Dinner on May 1. Duggins died on January 29 in an aviation accident near Washington, D.C. when American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a Black Hawk helicopter.  The Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, Wichita State University held a virtual town hall with student government leaders where president Richard Muma, provost Monica Lounsbery and vice president for Student Affairs Teri Hall said the school faces a budget shortfall that may lead to a near 4% tuition increase and changes in building projects, parking, and accessibility services—points driven by lower federal aid and shifting state and federal rules. They added that new programs and constructions are planned to help support students amid the expected enrollment decline.  The Sunflower

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, ICT Trees and donors distributed 60 free trees—redbud, maple, and oak—to Wichita homeowners, churches, and businesses and offered guidance on proper planting to help reduce heat islands. The giveaway targeted central zip codes where less vegetation has led to warmer temperatures.  KWCH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, fans lined up outside Koch Arena as WSU Cheer returned home with the national championship trophy after winning the title. The team marked its victory with a spirited homecoming that excited the local community.  KWCH
  • The WSU cheer and dance teams won a national competition after competing in Daytona Beach, Florida from April 9 to 13 — they took part in the NCA and NDA National Championships.  KSN
