  • Sedgwick County Zoo announced on Thursday that Talia gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Bomani—he stood up minutes after birth and has remained close to his mother as they bond.  KWCH
  • Alfred Urbina owns 4 The People Barber Lounge in north Wichita, which he opened two years ago to give precise haircuts and support the community through free kids' cuts and local events. He holds regular community events—he is planning new partnerships with local nonprofits and the YMCA this summer.  KMUW

CRIME NEWS

  • Police reported a 4-year-old was shot inside a Tobacco, Beer and Grocery store on Harry east of I-135 this past Friday, marking the third child shooting in recent weeks that left a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old dead — detectives are investigating and a local gun shop manager is urging gun safety by offering free gun locks and training.  KSN
  • Wichita police investigated a shooting near 2800 S Hydraulic on Thursday evening that left one person injured when a gunshot wound victim arrived at a nearby hospital—an update was expected on Friday.  KWCH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amid stage 2 of its drought plan, Wichita is giving away free low-flow shower heads and aerators to help residents save water—devices that can conserve up to 8,000 and 700 gallons yearly. The giveaway will start Monday, April 14 at City Hall, Wichita Public Library locations, and local resource centers, funded by the city's Water Conservation Rebate Program with $96,151.08 available for home improvements.  KSN
  • The City of Wichita Board of Ethics found that Councilmember Brandon Johnson violated the Code of Ethics by using profanity during a January altercation with Rep. Ford Carr at a Topeka restaurant, but no fine was imposed because Carr had provoked the incident+ Johnson accepted the finding and said he stands up for what is right.  KWCH
