- ➤ Michael Austin, Jr. was sentenced to nine years in prison and must pay $7,500 to the Crime Victims Compensation Board after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting 18-year-old Amyion McDowel-Mitchell during an argument on Sept. 23 in southeast Wichita near Oliver & Harry. - ➤ Jose Acosta (33) faces charges of first-degree murder and interference with law enforcement for a November shooting spree that began in Prospect Park where Myron Tucker (40) was fatally shot, and his trial is set for late August. KWCH

- ➤ Early Bird Riverfest buttons are on sale today for $15 at Riverfest headquarters at 444 E. - ➤ Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed a bill that allows fireworks to be sold all year—ending the seasonal sales rule—and permits temporary vendors to sell fireworks from June 20 through July 7. The law also names the Fallen Firefighters memorial in Wichita as the state's official memorial. KWCH
- ➤ State lawmakers approved three new license plate options when Governor Kelly signed House Bill 2201 on April 9. Drivers may buy National FFA, Route 66 Association and blackout-style plates from KDOR beginning Jan. 1, 2026—each with its own fee structure—while fees support local programs. KSN
- ➤ The Sedgwick County waste tire collection event began on Thursday at the County West Yard and will run through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—residents, farmers, and local government may recycle up to 50 tires each while business tires are not accepted. KWCH
